ABOUT THE ARTIST

Gil Bruvel is an artist focused on three-dimensional representation, born from French parents in Sydney, Australia, in 1959. He grew up in the south of France, but currently lives in Wimberley, Texas.
After a long period of training in his father’s cabinet-making business, he attended a prestigious restoration workshop in the city of Chateaurenard, in France. This allowed him to master many high-level craft techniques and to work easily with many types of materials and forms. Gil creates sculptures in bronze, wood, steel, but also furniture design, having as reference points architects such as Zaha Hadid, Frank Gehry and Lebbeus Woods.

In his artistic career, Bruvel was influenced by Surrealist artists such as Salvador Dali, Max Ernst and Giorgio De Chirico, especially in his initial phase, in search of something deeper than reality, trying to escape from it.
Then he focused on the human condition, the functioning of the mind and meditation, thus trying to grasp the different dimensions of reality and its multiple perspectives.
His works portray human faces, formed by many colored wooden shafts, positioned at different depths, thus creating continuous geometric shapes, with a dialogue between full and empty spaces represented by the breaks in lines and shapes.
According to the artist the so geometric and pixelated contours represent the neural paths, while the nuanced color is the interconnection between the different human minds. Finally, the charred wood is the result of the natural phenomena that shape everything.

Gil Bruvel is represented by galleries all over the world: in the United States, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Italy, Spain, China, Qatar, United Arab Emirates and South Africa.
Since 1988 he has been participating in numerous solo and collective exhibitions in the United States, Europe and Asia.
He has won many awards, among which the most prestigious is the bronze medal awarded in 1987 by the Palais des Congres in Paris at the young age of 28.
